Question for EDMS 350/550

Hello!
I would like to pose a question for you to consider and respond to. With this being our first week, and with all the focus on technology, I would like to have you answer this one:
  • If you could imagine one piece of technology that exists today that you would like to use in your classroom, what would it be and why?

Respond to this post with your answer and I look forward to hearing your opinion!

  1. I would LOVE to have a smartboard. Right now it is just a dry erase board & an overhead for transparencies. I am totally over making transparncies just to wash them off later to make another transparency just to wash it off to make another...Powerpoints will leave no marker residue on my hands! I don't know much about smartboards, but I can't wait to get my hands on one to start playing. ~Kathy McDonald

  2. Computers, projector and math/science software. I would like access to a class with computers and some kind of software that enables one to perform applications of physics and mathematics. I would also like a projector with access to the same software, so my students can follow me. That way the students can relate the material with clear images which will hopefully help them understand the current topic of discussion. My drawings are pretty pitiful, so incorporating this type of technology will really benefit my students.

  3. If I could have one piece of technology in my classroom it would be laptops (with internet access). With students having laptop access so much can be done and the learning is infinite.

  4. I would like to have computers with educational software to help students with special needs learn easier. I worked at a school in Nashville as a special ed teachers aid and the students LOVED to get on the computer and go to work on reading, writing, math, and science. It really helped with the learning process.

  5. In today's classroom where kids are so used to the fast pace of tv and internet, i think the use of a smart board is the key piece of technology to have. It is very versatile. You can use it to show DVD's or powerpoints, but you can also use the interactive tools to get students involved in their learning. I love the websites like Grammar Bytes that pose grammar questions, and students get immediate feedback about run-on sentences for example. It is also an awesome tool for visual learners to see the lessons clearly. Special needs students can benefit by the use of constrasting colors to emphasize different parts of a paragraph for example. There are just so many possibilities with the use of a promethean/smart board!

  6. Since I have 3 out of five students who are non-verbal. I would like some technology that would permit my non communicative students the ability to speak.

  7. If I had to pick technology to use in my classroom it would be for those who are non verbal as well. I observed in a special needs preschool classroom and the tech/talk devices were so crucial to the stduents learning. They know what they want to say but the words just won't come out for them. The tech/talk devices are essential especially for younger students who are non verbal but in the stages where their peers are learning to spell, read and write.

  8. The SMARTboard would be the technology that I would want to use in my class. This gives the class as a whole to learn in the way the each student can learn and at their speed. This would enhance my teach style and my lesson plans to create an atmosphere that would be attractive to not only the general students in the class the the ones with special needs too.

  9. If I could pick ANY piece of technology that exists today I would choose the HP Multi-touch video wall (dare to dream!). As a visual arts teacher, something so spectacualar is sure to get creativity flowing and encourage students to step outside the realm of possibility and into their imaginations. Stimulating the senses is a good way to fuel inspiration and this piece of technology is mesmirizing and intriguing.

  10. I would love to have laptops in the classroom. I know of some highschools that provide laptops, and I think that it is an excellent tool; however, I would definitely institute significant website blocks to prevent students from surfing during classtime. If I did have laptops, I would ideally have the software that allows teachers to see each student's screen from the front of the room to make sure they are working on the task at hand.

  11. I would have laptops with internet access in the classroom for all students. I would like students to have contact with other students around the world who are also learning a second or additional language.

  12. I realize how spoiled this may sound, however, my school affords many funds to technology. So my request would not be for a "piece" of technology as much as an "access" to it. I would love for all of my students to have their own e-mail accounts recognized by the school. I understand the student-teacher relationship implications of this, but access transparency between the students and their parents and the teachers and the administration could be set up. I just see this as an answer to so many homework and absentee issues (especially coupled with googledocs).
